Avis Dam Birding Walks

Join Jacob, your expert guide, on a fully personalized few hours this best known birding spot at the edge of town. The dam property spans multiple habitats, including grasslands, cliffaces, thorn forests, mudflats, and the lake itself. A walk around the dam can take anywhere between 2-3 hours and is a great way to start an initial tally with charismatic species like Grey-Go-Away-Bird and Crimson-breasted Shrike. We might also come across Kalahari Scrub-Robin, Pied Barbet, and Pririt Batis. A stakeout at a well-placed watering hole could reveal seedeaters coming to drink (Red-headed Finch, Yellow Canary, Great Rufous Sparrow, Green-winged Pytilia). In the dry season, the lake's edge fills with African waders like Kittlitz's Plover and migrants, such as Ruff. Out on the lake, we are sure to find some South Africa Shelduck. Avis is also the best location in the country for the scarce Maccoa Duck, which is sometimes joined by the secretive White-backed Duck.

Of course, the main target here is Namibia's near endemic (and company namesake), the Rockrunner, whose liquid call echoes through the cliffs. We should also scan the skies for the newly-split near endemic, Large Rock Martin, and another Namibia special, the large and powerful Bradfield's Swift.

Tour Modes

I can cater to any type of birder—beginner to advanced, active hiker to scope-lover. Understanding your objectives before the tour begins helps me plan the best day possible for meeting your birding objectives. Most birders I meet fall into one or more of these archetypes:

The List Builder

You want to rack up as many species as possible for your Life and/or Namibia List and you're ready to go hard to do it.

The Leisure Birder

You love birds, and you'll add them to your list, but mainly you enjoy being out in nature at a reasonable pace and intensity; you wouldn't mind seeing a few mammals too.

The Photographer/Recordist

Your main objective is capturing beautiful images or recordings. If the light's bad or the wind's blowing, we might as well find a shady spot to wait it out.

The Targeter

You have specific species that you want to find. We should skip over every common bird in pursuit of remedying those gaps in your list.
